Family law governs the relationships between individuals connected by kinship or marriage, as well as the disputes that may arise between them.

Whether in the context of a marriage, legal cohabitation or an unmarried relationship, separation between partners is often a difficult stage that raises various issues relating to:

• relationships between spouses or cohabitants;
• parental authority and arrangements for the accommodation and care of children;
• financial matters, such as the assessment of maintenance obligations (contributions towards the children’s education, maintenance payments between spouses during the marriage and following divorce);
• property matters, such as the liquidation of the matrimonial property regime and the treatment of jointly acquired assets, particularly real estate.

Family law also covers inheritance law, which may give rise to disputes between heirs in connection with the division of an estate.

It also encompasses issues relating to the establishment of paternity or maternity, particularly in cases of separation or same-sex parenthood, including assisted reproduction and surrogacy.
